Road to Recovery, Inc. and its over 5,000 survivors and their families thank and congratulate the Office of the Attorney General of Illinois for its thorough and comprehensive investigation of the Roman Catholic Church in the State of Illinois. In Illinois, as in every State, Archdioceses and Dioceses engaged in a massive and deliberate cover-up of cases of clergy and religious sexual abuse for two reasons: to protect their so-called image of holiness and piety, and to protect their vast and seemingly unlimited resources. Instead of directing millions and millions of dollars toward attorney fees that helped hide the “secret,” Church leaders should have taken the path of righteousness – helping victim/survivors heal. The Catholic Church’s egregious behavior constitutes a “war of attrition” against clergy sexual abuse victims, and the Church is waiting for “us” to die. That thinking and acting places the Church among the most despicable institutions in the world. Road to Recovery, Inc. has assisted victims and families from every diocese in Illinois, and we will continue to fight until the last victim heals.
